In Vista, Halloween Happens on Friday Night

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. Downtown Vista still holds its big night on Friday. Vista Fright Night takes over Main Street on Friday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. The night includes trick-or-treating, costume contests, a haunted tractor ride and a haunted house inside the AVO Playhouse. On Saturday, Oct. 31, Downtown Vista's calendar lists exactly one event, and it's a cocktail bar with a password.

If you plan the weekend around the 31st, you'll miss downtown's part of it. Here is how Friday night works, hour by hour, and what the calendar holds for the rest of the fall.

Downtown Puts Its Halloween on the 30th

The City of Vista's Oct. 12 announcement calls Fright Night Discover Vista's event and places it in Downtown Vista Village on Friday, Oct. 30. It promises costume contests, trick-or-treating along the street and a haunted house at the Avo Playhouse. Downtown Vista's fall roundup, Haunted Vista, describes the night as the event where "Halloween fun wraps up." It calls Fright Night Vista's largest "trunk or treat" event.

Those words matter for planning. Downtown's Halloween season started weeks earlier and ends on Friday. The weekend before, it had a costume-and-car afternoon at The Commons on Saturday, Oct. 24, and a muscle car show on Sunday, Oct. 25. So Friday is the final downtown Halloween night, and Saturday is mostly left open.

The haunted house runs only on Friday night. Tickets are sold that night only, at the theater's own box office. Kids who want to go through it need to be downtown on Friday.

How the Four Hours Run

Fright Night has a few fixed times and a lot of free time in between. The street opens at 5 p.m. Booths line Main Street, a Haunted Trail tractor ride runs, and local retailers hand out candy. Discover Vista says Vista firefighters and sheriff's deputies will pass out candy and show off their fire engines and patrol cars. The organizers call this a community favorite.

The costume contests set the pace for the first part of the night. The City's announcement places them in the Color Story Florals parking lot, the former Croziers, with this schedule:

Time Contest
5:30 p.m. Babies
5:45 p.m. Ages 2 to 5
6:00 p.m. Ages 6 and up
6:15 p.m. Families
6:30 p.m. Dogs

Discover Vista's Fright Night page groups the contests into larger blocks. It lists 5 and under from 5:30 to 6, ages 6 and up plus families from 6 to 6:30, and pets from 6:30 to 7. The two schedules agree that it all starts at 5:30 and that dogs go last. If your costume is a family theme or a dressed-up dog, check both pages before you head out, because the exact time slots don't match.

A workable plan for a family with young kids looks like this:

  1. Get there close to 5 p.m. and trick-or-treat along Main Street before the contest crowd gathers.
  2. Go to the Color Story Florals lot for your contest time. The youngest age groups are judged first, starting at 5:30.
  3. After the contests, ride the Haunted Trail tractor or stop by the fire and sheriff vehicles.
  4. Save the AVO Playhouse haunted house for last, after the candy bags are full and the costumes are a little worn.

Keep an eye on South Santa Fe Avenue too. Downtown Vista says Mari Fortuna, the newest of the Wild Hunters Vista "ghost horses," will roam the crowds there during Fright Night.

The Haunted House Is the One Thing That Costs Money

Everything on the street is free. The haunted house is not. Discover Vista and the City of Vista are turning the AVO Playhouse into what organizers call a house of horrors. Tickets go on sale only on event night, at the Avo Ticket Box: $5 for kids 10 and under and $8 for everyone else.

Organizers say it "will scare and delight all ages." They also describe it as "not for the faint-of-heart." Discover Vista's volunteer call adds more detail. It asks adult volunteers, who must be 18 or older, to help with setup, play live zombies and work the haunted tractor rides. Expect people in costume, not just props, and decide whether your youngest is ready for that before you're standing in line.

Bring a few small bills for the ticket box. That way the whole night costs the price of the haunted house plus whatever you spend on dinner.

After the Street Closes, Broadway Stays Open

Fright Night ends at 9 p.m., but the cocktail part of the night runs until 11. Belching Beaver Tavern & Grill at 302 E. Broadway is running a Haunted Tiki Speakeasy from 5 to 11 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30. The bar serves tiki cocktails and Halloween-themed specialty drinks. The password changes every night, and you get it by sending a direct message. Ask for the password before you leave home, not from the sidewalk at 9:15.

The speakeasy has been open every Friday and Saturday since Oct. 9. Downtown Vista's November calendar keeps it going after Halloween, with Friday and Saturday nights listed into early December. The tavern itself serves house beer and a scratch kitchen for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. That makes it a good stop either before the contests or after the street empties.

Two other downtown options are close to the Fright Night area:

  • Seven Seas Bar & Grill on Main Street is a seafood restaurant with a grab-and-go fish market. The market is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, so pick up dinner to take home before the contests start.
  • Inzane Brewing Co. shows up on Downtown Vista's events calendar with recurring events through October.

Saturday Belongs to the Speakeasy

On the 31st itself, the downtown calendar is close to empty. The Haunted Tiki Speakeasy is the only downtown event listed for Saturday. No second Main Street trick-or-treat is scheduled, no haunted house, no contests. All of that happens on Friday.

Families who want the organized version of Halloween should plan on Friday. If you're hosting relatives who are only in town for the actual holiday, Friday is the night to bring them downtown. Saturday's only downtown listing is a cocktail bar that needs a password.

What the Calendar Holds After Halloween

Once Friday's events end, downtown's calendar shifts to daytime and to November. These are the dates to know:

  • NovemberFest, Saturday, Nov. 7, noon to 4 p.m. Alta Vista Botanical Gardens holds its 12th annual NovemberFest at 1270 Vale Terrace Drive. It's 21 and over only. Tickets are $50 general and $45 for members through Oct. 31, then $55 and $50 on event day, so the early price ends the same weekend as Fright Night. The gardens' page and the event's Eventbrite listing both showed tickets for sale as of mid-October.
  • Salute to Service, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 9 a.m. The City's Veterans Day ceremony takes place at Veterans Memorial Park, 267 S. Santa Fe Ave. The City's event listing says more details are coming.
  • Two markets, Saturday, Nov. 28. The Vintage & Makers Market runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at re.find off main, 146 Eucalyptus Ave. The Vista Community Market follows from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gazebo Parking Lot at 102 S. Indiana St. Their hours overlap, so you can visit both on one late-morning trip.

The Veterans Day ceremony is on South Santa Fe Avenue, the same street where the ghost horse will walk on Fright Night. That keeps the same downtown corridor at the center of the calendar from Halloween through Veterans Day.

If Friday night has you thinking about how close your street is to Main Street, or you're hosting family who will be asking the same question, Janice and the team at The Davidson Realty know which parts of Vista are a short walk from the AVO Playhouse and the Broadway corridor. Request a complimentary home valuation and concierge consultation, and we'll show you what that kind of access looks like in your price range.
